“Alice” is one of a series of paintings I created a few years ago, which I refer to as my ‘orange nudes’.  I had accumulated quite a lot of sketches made from live models, and I wanted to express them in watercolor, but in a more abstract style than the drawings.      The two major colors I used for the figures were Alizarin Crimson and Cadmium Orange.  Unlike my normal technique of working wet-on-wet across the entire sheet, I concentrated on focusing on the figure primarily, then adding the background later.

The title is pure whimsy on my part.  As I completed the painting, I was listening to a song of the same name by one of my favorite musician/songwriters, Tom Waits.
