“Undertow”

“Quilting is my passion. I love the process and tactility of combining fabric and
paint to create my images. My quilts are an expression of ideas and emotions from
life experience and dreams. My compositions are pictorial, considering the whole
surface of the quilt as a canvas. Abstracted into an archetypal symbol, a figure
inhabits the landscape of the quilt, often a house shape which represents the different
places where we live, both physically and emotionally. I am seeking to express both
the universal and the personal experience of these emotional places.” -
Nana is a longtime local artist, who has lived in Santa Cruz for most of her life. She studied painting and drawing at UC Santa Cruz and received her MFA from San Francisco State with an emphasis on textiles. Her work has been shown both locally and internationally for the past 20 years.
Nana Montgomery combines fabric and paint to create her contemporary art quilts.
These textiles feature vibrant colors and recurring symbols that inhabit a dreamlike
landscape. Each quilt is a unique combination of color, pattern and texture; stitched
and quilted fabric that is often enhanced with paint and hand-
